“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” —Leonardo Da Vinci
Simplicity, by definition, is freedom from complexity; the absence of luxury or pretentiousness. Sophistication, on the other hand, often implies a sense of style, cultivated beauty and refinement. So is Da Vinci…

Least painful way to build a DAL with Monotouch
Data access in monotouch (C# for iphone) is a royal pain in the ass. I know most developers, whether C# or objc, are just stuffing SQL statements directly into their code but is one of my pet hates. Consequently I’ve been looking for a way around it.
As it turns out there’s no nice solution but there’s a half way solution that sucks a bit less.
It’s all Apple’s...

Damn you Apple
Damn you Apple. Damn you and your seductive products, your new store openings and your new pricing. I tried to resist your new 27 inches of power but resistance was futile. And damn your clapping “walk of shame” as I left the store carrying it’s half a tonne box.

Without realizing it, this compromised the machines backup procedure (drive to drive backups). This is pretty useless when you corrupt the VM image as I did - all the backups are inside of...
oDesk.com - Trust No-one
Despite my best attempts, I haven’t been able to clone myself. So last week, I took a gamble on oDesk.com and outsourced a few tasks to programmers in Belarus & Manilla. The results were fine but the way oDesk treat their providers is not.
oDesk software monitors keyboard activity and takes periodic screen captures while the provider is working - something which to me is an extreme act...

Windows 7 Blue Screen in Virtual Server R2
And you thought crashs/blue screen’s were a thing of the past.. Turns out when installing Windows 7 on Virtual Server R2 you need Service Pack 1 or the additions trigger a bluescreen.
That’s fine but the ‘regular’ SP1 from Microsoft claimed to have already been installed. After numerous bluescreens, frustration and 30 minutes of googling it turns out there is an alternate...
